The HearWiki takeAI-condensed

The Beyerdynamic DT 880 32 is a wired, semi-open over-ear headphone aimed at critical listening in quiet environments. It delivers a balanced, detailed sound with strong midrange and imaging, plus plush velour comfort, though its open-back nature leaks sound and provides minimal isolation, making it unsuitable for portable or noisy settings. The 32-ohm version can work with basic gear, but performance shines best with a dedicated amplifier.

What works

  • Detailed, balanced sound with excellent midrange clarity
  • Very comfortable velour pads and sturdy build
  • Open, spacious soundstage with good imaging
  • Low 32-ohm impedance works with many devices
  • Good value for critical listening at home

What doesn't

  • Semi-open design leaks sound and offers little isolation
  • Not recommended for portable use due to sound quality drop
  • Non-detachable cable limits replacement options
  • Could use more punch and excitement compared to top rivals

Stereophile found the 32-ohm DT 880 able to reach acceptable volume from portable gear, but felt the sound quality dropped enough that the value was poor. The reviewer specifically did not recommend it for portable use, especially because its semi-open design also provides little isolation.

What Hi-Fi praised the DT 880 for comfort, strong all-round sound quality, detailed treble, textured mids, and entertaining dynamics. The main criticism was that the headphone could use more attack and excitement compared with the very best rivals at the price.
