Philips Fidelio X3

The reviewer finds the Philips Fidelio X3 to be a competent but less characterful headphone compared to its predecessor, the X2HR. While it offers a larger soundstage and better gaming performance, the bass is reduced, the highs can be borderline sibilant, and the $349 price makes it a tougher sell against competitors like the Hifiman Sundara. The reviewer ultimately recommends the X2HR for most people, unless you specifically disliked the X2's tuning.

The reviewer finds the Philips Fidelio X3 to be a well-built, luxurious headphone that sounds slightly better than the X2HR, but he criticizes the high price and the poorly designed cables, particularly the long balanced cable with a 2.5mm connector and the non-standard wiring that requires a special cable. He concludes that while the sound and build are good, the cable issues and price make it a hard sell compared to the cheaper X2HR.

The reviewer finds the Philips Fidelio X3 to be a technical improvement over the X2, with a more linear and airy sound, but notes it is brighter and more sibilant, with thinner vocals. It faces stiff competition in its price range, and while it has good imaging and build, the reviewer still prefers the Beyerdynamic DT880 as an overall package.

The reviewer spent about a month with the Philips Fidelio X3, comparing it to the Hifiman Sundara and Sennheiser HD600. They find the X3 has premium build materials and a solid, sturdy feel, but note comfort issues with scratchy velour pads and a tight suspension strap. Sonically, they position it as a strong contender in the $350 range, though they prefer the sound of the Sundara and HD600 in some ways, ultimately giving it a mixed verdict.

The reviewer compares the Philips Fidelio X3 with the SHP9600 and X2HR, finding the X3 to be a step up in sound quality with a more balanced, transparent, and detailed presentation, while noting its premium build and design. They recommend the X3 for those seeking accurate sound reproduction, though they acknowledge it costs more than the other two.
