Shure Srh440a

The reviewer finds the SRH440A to be a poor-sounding headphone with bloated bass, grainy treble, and recessed mids, making it hard to recommend despite its comfort and build. The SRH840A is considered better but still has a V-shaped tuning that is not ideal for professional use, and the reviewer prefers competitors like the AKG K371.

The reviewer compares the Shure SRH440 and SRH440A, finding the original SRH440 to be a well-tuned budget headphone with excellent tonal balance, while the newer SRH440A is a significant downgrade with poor build comfort, an unusably long cable, and a bass-heavy, unnatural sound. The reviewer strongly recommends the original and criticizes the replacement as worse in nearly every way.

The reviewer finds the Shure SRH440A headphones comfortable and well-suited for podcasting, voice, and tracking applications, but notes their V-shaped sound with muddy low mids and scooped high mids makes them unsuitable for mixing. They consider them average overall, especially compared to similarly priced alternatives like the Sony MDR-7506.

The reviewer finds the Shure SRH440A to be excellent for monitoring and editing tasks, praising their comfort for long sessions and their accurate, uncolored sound that is essential for critical audio work. They note the headphones are wired, lack noise cancellation, and do not come with a case, but see these as acceptable trade-offs for the intended studio use.

The reviewer finds the SRH440A to be a solid and worthwhile upgrade over the older model, praising its comfortable fit, balanced and detailed sound, and durable build. They consider it a great value for both professionals and beginners, with only minor omissions like a carrying pouch.
