Criticaster’s aggregated expert verdict says the A990Z is comfortable, well-built, and offers excellent isolation, but the tuning is too bright and bass-heavy for music. The two linked expert opinions also point to mixed impressions, with one praising its overall use for dialogue and the other criticizing imaging, boomy bass, and build quality.

The reviewer was broadly positive and said the headphone met their expectations across the board. The tone of the review suggests approval of its overall performance and presentation rather than major reservations.

The review page presents the ATH-A990Z as a technically capable closed headphone with very wide frequency response and measured specifications, implying a favorable technical showing. The excerpt emphasizes the model’s measured performance and included accessories rather than any major flaws.

The reviewer found the ATH-A990Z to be a strong closed-back headphone for home listening and light mixing, with spacious sound, good detail, and low listening fatigue. They also emphasized that it is not a travel-friendly model and is best suited to listeners who value comfort and sound quality over portability.

This review notes that, at the time of writing, there were few objective measurements available for the A990Z, so it focuses more on subjective impressions and context. It does not provide a strong numerical verdict in the excerpt shown, but it frames the model as one that had been receiving favorable attention relative to its predecessor.
